The talks dealt with co-operation ties between the two countries and means of enhancing them. A host of regional and international issues of mutual concern were also discussed.
On the Qatari side the talks were attended among others by First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al-Thani, Finance Minister and acting Economy and Commerce Minister HE Yousef Hussein Kamal, president of the Emiri Diwan HE Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Saud al-Thani, secretary of the Emir for follow-up affairs HE Saad Mohamed al-Rumeihi and the economic adviser of the Emiri Diwan HE Dr Ibrahim al-Ibrahim.
The Belgian side included Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht, Finance Minister Didier Reynders and Economy and Free Trade Minister Marc Verwilghen.
Following the talks HH the Emir and the Belgian prime minister attended signing of a memo of understanding between Qatar and Belgium. The memo was signed by HE Kamal and Verwilghen.
Earlier HH the Emir was accorded official reception ceremonies at the Palais d’ Egmont.
The Emir attended a luncheon hosted by King Albert II and Queen Paula in honour of the Qatari delegation. Belgian Crown Prince Philippe and his wife, the Belgian prime minister and a number of ministers attended the function.
HH the Emir also met president of the Belgian Senate Madame A M Lizin. Talks at the meeting dealt with means of bolstering areas of co-operation between the two countries. They also reviewed a set of issues of mutual concern.
HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani also attended the dinner banquet hosted by the Federation of Belgian Companies in honour of the Qatar official delegation.
The function was attended among others by Belgian Crown Prince Philippe, the Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade, the president of the federation.
In a speech at the function HH the Emir expressed his pleasure over the meeting which aims at enhancing and promoting relations between two friendly countries.
The Emir stressed that Qatar had for a decade now taken the initiative to prepare and adopt a comprehensive programme for modernisation and promotion drive with a view to establishing a liberal and diversified economy, able to integrating into the global economy as well as the achievement of sustainable development.
"As a result of that our economy has achieved high growth rate and that our gross domestic product (GDP) has multiplied between 1995 and 2000, and multiplied again for the second time between 2000 and 2005."
"Qatar has now taken an advanced position among the world’s countries as per the international standards in the domains of human development and fiduciary rating," he added. - QNA
